Marker Demo of Stupid

This is for the
Love Project.
It is Saturday, Feb. 3 7-10pm
J Flynn Gallery
2950 A Randolph Ave
Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Maybe I'll actually not get sick this time and go.

Here is a crappy marker demo for the piece. Photos were taken with a digital camera when I could remember to take them, and a different lamp was used during part of it, so it looks all yellow. Woo hoo! quicktime pro! Oooh so artsy! So pretentious!

Oooh a video thing! Very swish! It's lovely to watch a piece develop like that. Not sure I'd like to hang around people dwelling on sad times though. Especially if there's booze involved...Dear God what a potential mess!!!

Now here's a childrens fable that'll make parents look over there kids shoulders. Bizairre and brilliant.

So, if I'm following the demo, you put down a flat color in marker, then go over it with more detail in pencil crayon?

Well, darn it all! How cute is that! Nice work as always!

elephant- Yah, you can put colerase down, with marker on top, or vice versa. Whatever works. Prismacolor pencil can get real messy. I also use a blotter paper to test how the markers/pencils look on paper. Watercolor can work too, but I haven't done that in awhile. blah, blah, blah...
Thanks for the nice comments, maybe if more people use markers, they'll be less expensive. But probably not since they probably are a petroleum product. Poop.

Awesome piece! I like how you showed your steps in making this. Great work! Did you get invited to work on this show? Or did you just submit work? I've always wondered how that worked.

Wow! that's neat! I'll look into inventing some hydrogen-fuelcell markers to help get you off your dependance on foreign oil markers. Now where did I leave my ultracapacitor...

I don't know why, but as soon as I saw that first image with just the plain ol' pencil.....it totally cracked me up.

Super amazing demo, Brianne. It's cool to see the the play by play of the Drouhard method.

We would sing and dance around

I really enjoyed your demo. This was the first video demo of a marker illustration I've seen. The music was a nice touch, but I would've liked to have heard what's going on in your mind as you are rendering. I appreciate the demo very much :)

I loooooooooooooooove your marker pieces. Gorgeous! I can't watch the video because our work computers are finicky but I shall give it a peak when I got home... yay!

I wish you all the best with your projects!

Yeah, great piece! This video was awesome. I want more tho! Explanations with each step would be a huge bonus. Seems like you layered lots of colors over black to get the BG, but I'll never know! Cheers!

That was the most inspiring thing I've seen as of late. The illustration is so happy and so much energy. I love seen the process. Drawing on paper, color pencils, and pen still so magical.

FANTASTIC! Thanks for the video! How lovely! How long would you say this piece took you? Oh, and which song is playing? I like it :)

PotatoFarmGirl said...

Thanks! The piece took about a week, I spent late nights after work on it. The song is by Natalie Walker-Quicksand (Stuhr Remix)

Hey, cool. I've been working a bit with layering Prismacolors over markers lately. Since you've been at it longer than I have -- do you find that the markers fade at all over time, or is there really not much of a difference?

Also, what do you use for the white on the bunny ears and hair?

Your pieces are stylish and creative. I like coming back to see what you've come up with next (or found on YouTube, for that matter... I blame you entirely for my newfound Emilie Simon addiction).

Are there any links you might have that shows more demonstrations or techniques on marker\color pencil renderings for illustrations like this? I'm two weeks away from finishing school and I'm gearing up for produce my portfolio. Thanks in advance!

Clinton- I haven't searched for any marker demos lately. Alot of people seem to be working digitally anymore. There are still alot of people who use markers, maybe check Katie Rice's blog, Glen Murakami, Jeff Ranjo, Bruce Timm stuff, Stefanie Achtnig, there are many amazing artists and everyone uses materials differently. The best way to get used to the markers is just use them, get used to how much they bleed, how certain colors mix, just go have fun! Find out what effects YOU like. That is what will make it unique and special. If I have time (or remember to charge my camera) maybe I'll make another demo, but it won't be as helpful as actually just doodling with them yourself. Maybe just take 3 or 4 random colors with you to color your sketches. It will force you to make combinations you normally would not make. Also, use them in a well VENTILATED area!!!! Congrats on finishing school!

Princess Rockstar Scientist- I think the markers can fade a little over time, keep art out of the sun. Alot of people work on laser/copier paper. Maybe that would help with some fading. Also, they can bleed a little after the piece is done too I've noticed. The white on the piece was done with White and Cream colored Prismacolor pencils. Sometimes white gel pen (Gelly Roll/ Sakura pen) is good for details. Gold metallic gel pen was used on the heart pendant/chain.
